Your One-Stop Source for Batteries and Fuel Cells

It has always been the flexibility of COMSOL Multiphysics that attracted people from the fuel cell and battery industries. The other software back in the day did not adequately support the ability to model the electrochemical equations that were required to properly describe the behavior of their appliances. As we noticed that more and more of these vendors were interested in COMSOL Multiphysics, this led to a great increase in COMSOL’s knowledge and ability to model these applications. For example, a Batteries and Fuel Cells Module was recently released. Now I would like to provide a page here where a number of these resources can be accessed — your one-stop source for batteries and fuel cells.

Fuel Cells were very popular when I was doing my PhD back in the 90’s. Every other researcher was looking at them. Since then, they never seemed to properly take the automotive market by storm, and have decreased in popularity. Nevertheless, their market is assumed to increase as this report maintains, probably outside of the automotive industry. The article is quite upbeat and maybe should be tempered by the information provided here.

Batteries, on the other hand, were old news in the 90’s. They were too big and heavy and old fashioned for the smart electric cars of the future. Then someone said “lithium” and now they’re all of a sudden big. Every automotive company is looking at them, including them in their product design and improving them. As this article suggests, they need them to stay in business. Not everything is automotive, and lithium-ion batteries actually started becoming popular in mobile devices as well.
