Moving Mesh Training

This course introduces you to the basics of how to treat deforming and moving geometries and meshes in COMSOL Multiphysics^® using the Moving Mesh interface and the ALE method. This powerful simulation tool enables you to include the effects of a changing geometry in all kinds of multiphysics models. The changes in the geometry may either be imposed or a result of the COMSOL Multiphysics^® computation. You will learn how to model the underlying physics in problems ranging from fluid-structure interaction to the physics of an electric valve. The treated theoretical concepts will be put into practice during the exercise sessions in which practical cases are solved using COMSOL Multiphysics^®.

• Overview of CAD tools and meshing techniques
• Overview of tools for parameterizing the geometry
• Union, Assembly, and Pairs
• Basics of the ALE method and reference systems
• Moving Mesh interface
• Deformed Geometry interface
• Rotations and rotating machinery
• Limitations of the method and alternatives
• Remeshing

We will cover various applications, including:

• Fluid-structure interaction
• Acoustic-structure interaction
• Thermal simulation of moving objects
• Electromechanical interaction
• Displacement of surfaces caused by chemical processes (such as corrosion, electrodeposition, absorption/desorption, and abrasion)

Suggested Background

This course is suitable for anyone interested in using COMSOL Multiphysics^® for the mathematical modeling of physics phenomena. An advanced undergraduate/beginning graduate level of engineering or science education is assumed. Attendees should have some understanding of the COMSOL^® software GUI, model-building methods, and multiphysics finite element methods.
